US Claiming Jurisdiction of All .net and .com Addresses
The United States’ Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) is claiming that they have jurisdiction over all .com and .net Internet addresses, meaning that they can extradite anyone from any country who owns a website doing illegal things according to the US laws, such as piracy. Even if it’s perfectly legal to do certain things according to the person’s own country’s laws, if it’s illegal according to the US laws they can be prosecuted if their website ends in either .net or .com. The ICE claims that they can do this because all of those websites run through Verisign, which is a company based in Virginia, before going through the rest of the US. There are currently a few cases of people who will soon be extradited to face prosecution, even though it wasn’t illegal in their home countries. Read more here.
