SSDs to Hit $1/Gigabyte in 2012
Gartner, a technology research group, is estimating that the price of SSDs will fall to just $1 per gigabyte in 2012. While still much more expensive than traditional hard disk drives, $1 per gigabyte is much better than the almost $2 per gigabyte that SSDs cost now. Gartner claims the prices will fall because of more demand on NAND memory making factories switch over to production of NAND, meaning more will be on the market. According to the article, NAND memory is expected to drop 30% in price this year, and another 36% from 2011 to 2012. Personally I’m curious how much this will slow down the sales of SSDs, because maybe people will start waiting for prices to fall. If you were going to buy an SSD in the near future, would you buy it soon to have it or wait for the prices to fall some time next year?
