Skype Switching Video Codecs
Skype is reportedly switching the video codec used in one-on-one video calls to Google’s open source VP8 codec. Group calls already use this codec, but with the addition of one-on-one calls using this codec, Google will see a big boost in use. Skype version 5.5 and above will use it, but only if the other person you’re calling is using the same version. So if you’re on 5.5 but your friend is on 5.4, it will use the old codec; but if you’re both on 5.5, you’ll be using the VP8 codec. You can read more on it here.
