Seagate Breaks Areal Density Record

· by John Ponio

Seagate, one of the most famous manufacturers of hard disk drives (HDD), announced today that their newest HDDs break the current areal density record. For those of you who don’t know what that entails, it basically means that Seagate put more gigabytes per unit of area on the platters of their new HDDs than previously possible. With just three platters in a 3.5in form factor, the new drives can fit up to 3TB of information (smaller when formatted, of course). The new platters fit 625 gigabytes per square inch. Rocky Pimentel, Seagate Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing, said, “Organizations of all sizes and consumers worldwide are amassing digital content at light speed, generating immense demand for storage of digital content of every imaginable kind. We remain keenly focused on delivering the storage capacity, speed and manageability our customers need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.” Read the press release here.
