No Subscription Multiplayer for Call of Duty
In a recent IndustryGamers interview, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said to IndustryGamers said that he can “unequivocally say we will never, ever charge for the multiplayer.” Fears started growing after an analyst outlined a plan for Activision to monetize online gameplay. Hirshberg said, “Are we going to be charging for multiplayer? The answer is no. The experience you have out of the box, connecting with the online community to play Call of Duty is absolutely integral to the experience and we’ll never charge for that. It’s not going to be something we’ll attempt to monetize; it’s part of the package.” Great news for gamers, but not the greatest news for Activison. A model similar to that of Blizzard’s (now Activision Blizzard’s) World of Warcraft could bring in some serious revenue. Only time will tell whether they will “never, ever charge for the multiplayer” or not.
