Next Ubuntu Version Announced as "Oneiric Ocelot"
Ubuntu 11.10 has been announced with the code name of “Oneiric Ocelot.” Oneiric, for those of you not so hip on your vocabulary, means “of or relating to or suggestive of dreams.” An Ocelot is, of course, a leopard-looking but house-cat-sized feline (picture above). The main feature of 11.10 is a unity UI. If you’ve used the netbook edition of Ubuntu’s early release, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Unity is basically an overlay that lets you access the main programs, documents, and most anything else quickly and easily. For those of you with weak graphics capabilities, there will be a 2D environment to make that no problem. The rather strange name comes from Mark Shuttleworth’s idea of innovation: “part daydream, part discipline.” Oneiric Ocelot is expected to be released in October. Read more here.
