New USB Specification to Bring 100W Power to USB

· by John Ponio

For years now, USB connections have been charging our phones, mp3 players, and cameras, but wouldn’t it be cool if you could charge your laptop through USB? No more proprietary power cables for every didn’t model of laptop; no more having to make doubly sure that you’re buying the right replacement charger off of Ebay. Just a USB cable. Wouldn’t that be awesome? Well, a new USB specification will hopefully do just that. It could supply 100W of power with variable voltages so you could power laptops, screens, and whatever else you can think of. USB Promoter Group chair Brad Saunders said at the announcement, “Building on the rapidly increasing industry momentum for using USB bus power to charge a broad range of mobile devices, the new USB Power Delivery specification extends USB’s cable power delivery capabilities beyond simple battery charging. For example, charging the battery of a notebook PC, or simply powering that notebook PC while actively using the USB data connection, would be possible. Conceivably, a notebook PC could rely solely on a USB connection for its source of power.” You can read more on the announcement here.
