New Rootkit Infection Requires a Factory Reset
A new rookit infection called Popureb.E installs itself so deeply that in order to remove it, you must use a recovery CD to restore the computer. “If your system does get infected with Trojan:Win32/Popureb.E, we advise you to fix the MBR and then use a recovery CD to restore your system to a pre-infected state,” said Chung Feng, who is an engineer with the Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC). What the malware does is install itself into the MBR (master boot record) so that neither the BIOS or the software detect it. Read more on how to detect it and how to remove it on Microsoft’s blog.
