Millenniata to Release Optical Disc That Lasts Forever

· by John Ponio

Optical disc storage is no doubt a good way to store data for short-term, but it isn’t meant to last for a lot of years. Hard drives fail randomly, so those can’t be trusted for long-term data storage, either. So what is a user to do if he wants his data to last forever? A start-up company called Millenniata has engineered an optical disc, that can be read in any regular DVD player, that is guaranteed to last forever. The material used is not released, but the company has said it is “stone-like.” Even the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) confirms that this disk will last forever after doing their own tests on it. Instead of a laser etching the information on a special layer that’s on regular CDs and DVDs, a laser directly carves the information into the disc, making whatever information that’s burned permanent. Sadly, because it has to carve the data directly into the disc, write speeds are slow. 4x, to be exact, or 5.28MB/s. Regular DVDs are 8x. The amount of data that can be stored is the same as a DVD, though, at 4.7GB. You can read more on it here, and check out the website here.
