Google Clarifies Chromebook Costs

· by John Ponio

Recently there was a bunch of hubbub over Google’s Chromebooks, whether they will have a subscription or not, their cost, etc. Well, a recent Engadget article clarifies everything from Google’s I/O conference. So far it looks like there will be four models, two from Samsung and two from Acer. A handy chart is on Engadget’s website. I’m personally curious how the subscription model will work out. For education (cheapest versus enterprise), it’s $23 per month for 100MB of data plus the computer, or $20 per month for the computer. Regularly the hardware is $499 and under. The cost per user on the subscription for three years is greater than the consumer model, but the subscription will have the warranty and replacement and support and all of that. Four hundred dollars is a hefty price for a computer that doesn’t have a usable hard drive, so doubts are reasonable on the success of this.
