Cisco in a Lawsuit for Helping China Censor the Internet

· by John Ponio

Cisco, a very famous manufacturer of basically everything in the communication world, is now involved in a lawsuit for allegedly helping the Chinese government censor the internet and monitor those who would oppose the Communist government. The Human Rights Law Foundation brought the suit against Cisco Thursday. Their main thread of evidence is a leaked sales presentation of the “Golden Shield” firewall. The presentation advertises the firewall with the phrase, “douzheng evil Falun Gong cult and other hostile elements.” “Douzheng is a Chinese term used to describe the persecution of undesirable groups. It was widely used by the Communist Party in the Cultural Revolution.” Meanwhile, Cisco claims: “Cisco does not operate networks in China or elsewhere, nor does Cisco customize our products in any way that would facilitate censorship or repression.” For a little more detail and how all of the details of why it’s legal to sue for this reason, check out this article.
