AMD Announces 1GB HD6950

There have been rumors recently about a Radeon HD6950 with 1GB of RAM instead of the normal 2GB. Well, the rumors were true. AMD is reporting that it will release a 1GB Radeon HD6950. There’s nothing different aside from the lower RAM spec and (slightly) lower price. Below is the release:

We would like to take this opportunity to update you on our product positioning with a new variant of the AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series of products. When we launched the AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series in December, AMD introduced our most advanced enthusiast GPU ever. Equipped with a 2GB frame buffer for extreme high quality settings & very high Eyefinity resolutions we delivered an immersive gaming experience. With flexible image quality features like MLAA and EQAA, AMD delivered to our enthusiast gamers the ultimate graphics card. AMD HD3D Technology, coupled with excellent Crossfire scaling and our revolutionary AMD PowerTune power management technology paved the way for gamers to experience 2nd Generation DirectX 11 technology based on our world-class GPU. To further improve our products, we’ve continued to listen to your feedback and those of our customers. With the Catalyst 11.1a drivers (to be publically available on January 26th) we have improved the default image quality and also created new settings for different end user preferences. These drivers also bring more value to new and existing users alike with significant performance increases (up to and over 30% in cases) and allow end users across the range of products to experiment with their own balance of image quality and performance on DirectX11 titles with the new tessellation slider. We encourage you to test with this updated driver to get the most accurate comparison. Additionally AMD’s partners are introducing the AMD Radeon HD 6950 1GB variant, bringing all the capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series to new price points. Between $200-$300 ender users can choose from:

Product	Available From:
AMD Radeon HD 6950 2GB	USD $289 or $269 soft
AMD Radeon HD 6950 1GB	USD $259

AMD continues to offer our customers compelling graphics solutions across the range. With the introduction of the 1GB version of the AMD Radeon HD 6950 and our Catalyst 11.1a driver, we bring an incredible feature set and enthusiast class performance to a highly competitive price point.
