Ubuntu 12.04 'Precise Pangolin' LTS Released

· by John Ponio

As previously reported, Ubuntu 12.04 “Precise Pangolin,” which will be supported with bug fixes and updates for five years, was released today, April 26. There are quite a few new things, most surprising of them all being the first implementation of the new HUD interface that I wrote about back in January. Right now it’s pretty basic, but Canonical will be releasing updates and new features for it as time goes on.

Usually I wouldn’t jump on every new update to Ubuntu, but I’m really excited to try this one mostly because of the HUD interface. Installation will be pretty easy, thanks to flash drives and a nifty program called UNetbootin. What it does is take an .iso disk image, in this case for Ubuntu 12.04, and “burn” it to the flash drive. It has its own bootloader that it installs, so your flash drive will be bootable and everything. All you need to do is select the .iso image from the program’s UI, select a destination flash drive, and run it. It takes maybe 10 minutes, most likely less, and you can easily install Ubuntu from there. To view all of the download links for Precise Pangolin, go here.
