ATI Promises OpenGL Performance Boost?

· by Jerid A. Neely

OpenGL hasn’t been crucial enough lately for the driver writers at ATI to worry about it. But now that Doom 3 is right around the corner (5 days and 10 hours left to wait ;o) ), they have apparently committed themselves to rewriting the OpenGL code for their cards. This is good news for the folks with ATI cards as Nvidia has a reputation for good OpenGL performance. TheInquirer has a short article up on it.

“The good thing to know is that driver is coming and ATI might get closer or even faster then Nvidia, it would be safe to say that it will at least get much closer performance wise than it’s able to do now.”

In other ATI news, DH has a quick summary up of the Mobility Radeon 9800’s specs. A 9800 card in your notebook that is based on X800 technology just sounds sweet. And new features like Powerplay enable you to play longer than 5 minutes at those blistering speeds.

“For those LAN goers out there this looks like the product to own, much easier to cart about with you than a SFF PC and LCD and performance which is first class. For the rest of us it just looks like a damn good product and you’d be stupid to buy a laptop with graphics powered by any other solution. We can’t wait to try it.”
