XG Extreme Mod Kit

· by Stephen Jimenez
Manufacturer: XG

XG is a subsidiary of veteran case maker MGE Company. Manufacturer of Great Electronics Company is not well known in the retail market, but their Xtreme Gamer division aims to change that. All of MGE’s products are built to a high standard of quality and dependability, which continues with XG. Xtreme Gamer’s products are designed for gamers and the styles that gamers crave. Today, InsaneTek checks out their Mod Kit, a starter set of mod accessories that might turn your beige box into something that you’ll actually want to look at.

Like the items they hold, XG’s packaging is very attractive and well thought out. The back of the packaging has some information about the Mod kit’s features. On the left, there is a description of each included item. On the right, there is an image of each of these items in action. Opening the package up, we pull out a liner. Each item has its own compartment within the clear plastic liner. The compartments are formed to fit the items snugly, so that nothing comes loose and breaks.

First up is the UV cold cathode. It is a twelve inches long and half an inch in diameter. Square plastic pegs are at each end, which keep the cathode steady against a case surface. To power the cathode, it’s leads plug into an inverter, which connects to your power supply through a Molex connection. The inverter has a PCI slot switch that allows you to turn the cathode on and off. The cathode is very bright, much brighter than other cathodes I’ve used, and should light up your case easily. The UV cathode will allow objects like the IDE cables that are included in this kit, or Phish posters, to illuminate.

Adhesive Velcro strips are included with each of the three light fixtures in the kit (the cathode, Laser LED, and Beam LED), and the cathode’s inverter, to allow attachment to your case in any position.

This is the UV Laser LED. The casing is made of plastic and is covered in a shiny chrome-like paint. It can be mounted to a case by the Velcro strips or by two included screws. The Laser uses three separate LEDs placed in the light to shine on three separate areas. The LEDs are small, but very bright and powerful. The Laser is powered by a Molex connection.

Next is the UV Beam LED. This single LED is placed in a small plastic cylinder and mounted on to a rotating stand. The stand is separate from the LED and cylinder. The Beam can be mounted to the case with the use of the included Velcro tape. The LED is the same as those used in the Laser. In the last picture you’ll see the size of the beam from roughly three feet away from the IDE cable. Like the other lights, the Beam is also powered by a Molex connection.

This is the fan included in the kit. The fan is 80mm and made of clear plastic. It moves 34CFM of air at 30 decibels. There are four LEDs, one next to each screw mount. The fan is not loud and pushes a decent amount of air. As you can see in the last in the last picture, the fan I have is equip with white LEDs. Both the packaging and XG’s website designate them as UV LED fans. Let’s hope the kits in the retail channel do have the correct fans. Nonetheless, the white LED fan is quite a spectacle.

Last but not least are the IDE and floppy cables. They are rounded cables that provide less restricted airflow. The cables are wrapped in a mesh and UV reactive casing. The cables glow iridescently when subjected to UV light.

Conclusion and Thoughts

XG provides a nice set of simple mods in the Mod Kit for anyone looking to improve the appearance of their case. Though there is certainly more out there in the realm of modding, the Mod Kit provides a decent start. But how would we rate a product like this? It’s unlike other computer hardware and cases, so it would be difficult to give it our “Recommended” or “Must Have” awards. It’s either something you will want or not want. If you are looking to spice up your case and do not know where to start, then this would be a great kit to look into. If you hate the use of bright lights anywhere in close proximity to yourself, then it likely will not appeal to you. Regardless, XG has done a great job with the Mod Kit.

Pros:

  • Complete set, all products match up well
  • Quality cathode
  • Adhesive Velcro to mount the lighting

Cons:

  • None really
