Ultrabook Prices to Drop to $499 in 2013
President of Acer Jim Wong expects ultrabook prices to drop to $499 in 2013, according to a recent article by Digitimes. Acer hopes to ship 250,000 to 300,000 ultrabooks by the end of 2011. As of now, they’ve shipped 100,000 per month. In Q2 2012, he expects prices to fall to $799-$899, meaning that ultrabooks will become a viable competitor to high-mid-range notebooks. A $500 ultrabook? It sounds unlikely, but Intel is giving companies a $100 marketing subsidy to help manufacturers meet the at-most-$1000 price. This is expected to drop prices 5-10% in Q1 2012. Currently an ultrabook costs $940 after marketing and distribution (that includes OEM manufacturing cost, bill-of-materials, etc), so unless prices for components drop considerably in less than a year this $499 ultrabook is a pipe dream.
