Samsung and Sony have announced that Samsung will be purchasing all of Sony's shares of their joint LCD manufacturing company S-LCD Corporation. The deal, worth approximately $970,000 USD (KRW $1.08 trillion), will allow Sony to not have to worry about operating a manufacturing facility, as well as monetize their shares of the joint venture. The agreement also gives the two companies an agreement for Sony to buy Samsung's panels "with a goal of enhancing the competitiveness of both companies." Interestingly enough, the two companies will still be working together to research new LCD technologies. The deal is expected to go through in late January of 2012.
