Both Western Digital and Seagate have recently reduced the length of their hard drive warranties, some even down to one year. From Seagate's lineup, the Constellation 2, Barracuda XT, And ES.2 drives' warranties will stay at 3 years, while the Barracuda, Barracuda Green, and Momentus drives' warranties will drop to only 1 year. From Western Digital's lineup, the Caviar Black, all external drives, and Scorpio Black drives' warranties will drop to only 1 year while the Caviar Blue, Green, and Scorpio Blue drives' warranties will drop to 2 years. While this isn't the first time warranty duration periods have dropped, it's certainly rather surprising. Perhaps the companies are trying to have to replace fewer drives so they can sell more because of the limited supply they'll be facing, or maybe their drives are failing too much after 3 or 4 years that they are losing too much money. You can read more about it here.
