The Ubuntu Developer Summit in Orlando will be host to the official announcement that Ubuntu will, if everything goes as planned, become a tablet and smartphone OS to compete with iOS and Android. The new Unity UI seemed to many to be perfectly fitting for a tablet, so this might not come as a surprise to many of you. While there isn't even an alpha release out yet, Mark Shuttleworth, who is the founder of Canonical, said that he has been talking to partners for over 18 months about this. Shuttleworth did say, however, that he expects to see this come out with Ubuntu 14.04 in April of 2014. ARM will be one of the major contributing factors to Ubuntu as a tablet/smartphone OS, as a lot of devices use their SOCs (system-on-a-chip). The release of Ubuntu 12.04, which is an LTS (long-term-support) operating system, will free up resources so Canonical can work on creating an OS that will work many devices, not just desktop or laptop computers.
