Diablo III has been, very sadly, postponed until early 2012. Their original release deadline has been thrown out, most likely from problems experienced with the recently-opened closed beta. Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, said,

"With every game we make, the temptation is always very strong to launch as soon as possible. However, we didn't put so many years of work into Diablo III to release a game that was almost ready. The beta test is going very well, and we look forward to making the most of the extra time we're taking to deliver an experience that lives up to our vision for the game and the expectations of our players. Next year is going to be an incredibly busy one for Blizzard, and we hope an incredibly fun one for Blizzard gamers."

The beta will be extended, though, so those who are in it get to play that for longer. While it's sad that the release will be postponed, we should all know by now that if Blizzard is postponing their release, it will be worth it. It's very unlike Blizzard to release an un-polished game, and Diablo III should be no exception. You can read the press release here.
