Comcast started its $9.99 Internet plan for low-income families called "Internet Essentials." Basically its very low-tier Internet service for cheap. The advertised speeds are 1.5Mbps down and 384Kbps up. The requirements are simple:

  • Is located where Comcast offers Internet service
  • Has at least one child receiving free school lunches through the National School Lunch Program
  • Has not subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the last 90 days
  • Does not have an overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment
This plan is part of the FCC's regulation on the Comcast-NBC merger, interestingly enough. You can read the Internet Essentials FAQ here and view the main page here.
