A new Building Windows 8 Blog Post claims that Windows 8 will support native .iso and VHD mounting. For those of you who don't know, .iso files are disc images of either DVDs or CDs. Because optical formats are generally so slow and require changing the disc in the drive if you want different data, many power users prefer using .iso files because there can be many discs mounted at the same time with greater speeds. Currently third-party software is required to do this in Windows, but the requirement will be no longer thanks to Windows 8 now natively supporting this. VHD files are virtual hard disks, which are used for virtual PC machines. These can will now be mounted to the main, non-virtual operating system without third-party software.
