The guys over at Maximum Tech put together a little video explaining the differences of passive and active HDMI cables. Regularly, passive HDMI cables can't reach much more than 30 feet or severe quality problems will ensue, most likely a loss of signal. To be that length, even, they must be very thick and the cables require a lot of copper and a lot of shielding. If a longer cable is needed, you can either get a signal amplifier (which will result in a lower-quality image) or and active HDMI cable. To find out what exactly that is, watch the video here.
