People in the Russian government have tried to switch over to freeware in the past, but now President Vladimir Putin has signed a document outlining a transition to GNU/Linux freeware between 2011 and 2015. Linux will start being used in the second quarter of 2012. Thanks to Google translate, we have the original article. Check it out here. This will be interesting because it will show us if a government can run on free software. No doubt Linux has solid operating systems, but can a government run on them? We'll see.
