World's Fastest Supercomputer, and China Has It
|
China has recently unveiled the world fastest supercomputer, the Tianhe-1A. Nvidia claims it can sustain 2.507 petaflops. While the previous "world's fastest supercomputer," the United States' own Cray XT, or Jaguar, could preform at up to 2.66 petaflops, Nvidia claims the Tianhe is faster because that 2.66 was only at it's peak, and it wasn't sustained. For the record, a petaflop is a thousand trillion calculations per second. Using 7,168 Nvidia Tesla M2050 GPUs and 14,336 CPUs, this system sucks up only 4.04MW. The computer will be used for the usual: scientific research.
