In a recent interview with Kotaku, Electronic Arts Chief Operating Officer Peter Moore said something very interesting (paraphrase): free to play may be the business model of the future. This is extremely surprising coming from the the money-grubbing company that most people consider EA to be. To be more specific, he said, "I think, ultimately, those microtransactions will be in every game, but the game itself or the access to the game will be free."

In another part of the interview he said that right now people need to be patient while publishing companies (like EA) figure out what to do. Like the music industry, things are changing. EA has to figure out how to change but still be profitable. Free-to-play with microtransactions looks to be what the new business model will be, but it will take some time.
