Starting April 1, if the plans get shareholder approval, Samsung's LCD division will become Samsung Display Co. Rumors have been going on for a while, but until Monday nothing had been announced. Samsung Display Co. will start off with $668 million in capital, just $2 million more than the $666 million that division lost last year thanks to sluggish TV sales. More rumors going around now that the split has been announce say that Samsung Display Co. will merge with Samsung Mobile Display, which is Samsung's OLED (organic light emitting diode) display business that's so far been concentrated on phone screens. Another reason this split will be a good thing for Samsung, as pointed out by IB Times, is that it will shield Samsung Group, the "mother" company, from lawsuits as Apple and Google are rumored to be working on their own TV products. The TV market is sure to be more exciting in the near future, as 4K and 8K resolutions enter the scene and OLED displays become more mainstream. We'll see how well Samsung Display Co. does financially, though. Last year wasn't so great for them, so hopefully the split does something for the company.
