Hey guys, I've never really tried to bench my card cause i had a low fsb. Now that a got a decent system i thought id give it a go. I cant seem to OC my video card by 5 points in core/mem. I get lines all over my screen. Its not a heat problem because i got the Giant II mod and a 120mm and a 80mm fan on the card. Maybe i just have a bad card but with my first test i got 18.2k.

more testing to come... any ideas on why i cant OC the card?

I know 3dmark likes high fsb and i think 233-235 is most i can get.
What program are you using to oc it? Use ATI tool, or if not that try Riva Tuner

im using rivatuner... and i can get +5 on core and mem, over that i get bad artifacts.
Get Ati tool, and use the find max core/mem feature.

hmmm ok thanks.... how high can i OC the voltage? ive always been scared to do it... is it risky?
Its always risky to do a v-mod. If you have a chopped hsf on there, I went to 1.8v no problem, but how well does the cooler on yours do? I don't think it is the voltage thats limiting to a 5mhz oc though.

hmmmm, i dont know... the heatsink gets pretty damn hot. so its making good contact. plenty of fans around it but my room is kinda warm all the time.

wow that pretty low.
my Barton at 11x217 IIRC broke 20k with my 9800NP sammy.
work on your card clocks.

If your HS is hot, it probably means your GPU is hot too... Sounds like you still need better cooling on at least the HS. Anyways, maybe I missed it, but what 9800 Pro card are we even talking about? What memory is it using? What are the temps of the card? What drivers? More specifics please... You can see my sig for my clocks on my Tyan 9800 Pro. I dont know about your rig, but last I remember on that rig in the sig I got just passed 21K in 2001. I havent benched my AMD 64 3500+ setup much...

Ati a regular ATI 9800 pro card... not sire about the mem chips... cant get to em to see em. Dunno temps beacuse i lost power cord to my temp probe. Cat 4.11 drivers. Something is definatly wrong because i should be able to OC it at least a little.

Yeah you should be able to OC some. When I broke 24k with my 2.4C I think my clocks were 525/384.
You need to find out if you have Samsung chips. If you have, there is a way to make your Vid card fly! :)

The 9800PRO is really terrible when it comes to heat problems. That troubled me so much I couldnt play anything for a long time or else it overheats. I changed to the XT because it had a better heatsink for core and mem (They didnt have the ATI Silencers then only the Arctic Cooling Silencers). I think you should change your cooler to Ati Silencer 1.

Im using that on my geforce6800 and it killed over 10ºC from 50ºload to 38-40º. Which is a great difference. I remember my Radeon9800pro was hotter than my XT, and my XT's temp reader says its always at 58º idle. IDLE. That's terrible. It'd be around 65º load. I think the 9800pro needs more voltage than it was getting at stock. I tried every kind of cooler available at the time- ramsinks for the 9800pro, vantec copper sinks, the zalman heatpipes, the arctic cooling silencer, 2 92mm fans pointed directly at the card (one in back, one in front), but nothing helped that much.
So I decided to try NVidia again ( i had a mx, fx5200 before my radeons). I bought the 5900xt and it never overheated on me. I guess the two fan heatsink BFG uses for their setup makes a difference. Then again their sinks are copper whereas the 9800pro's heatsink was terribly small and made out of aluminum. That thing was really a piece of ****. Soonafter I jumped on the 6800 bandwagon. No overheating problems since my radeon days.
I like both cards in terms of performance, it's just the heat problems i cant tolerate. I dont want to switch to Water cooling because it's too much of a risk right now.
But if you really want to be completely sure heat is not a factor of your overclocking problem, get the water block since you already have a water setup.

Yeah, I was talking to Unknown, because I'm assuming you already know about the Gigacube bios trick!

How big your heatsink isnt as important as to how fast it dissipates heat. That's why copper is better than aluminum heatsink at cooling. and obviously water is way better than both.
Since you're selling it, you have nothing to worry about I guess. Best chance to get a new gpu that doesnt heat up as much. Those bulky coolers aren't really a necessity.
